Novi Sad


Novi Sad is the administrative, economic, sports, cultural, scientific and touristic centre of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the second largest city in Serbia with the population between 300,000 and 400,000 citizens.


The City of Novi Sad has the necessary diversity of a modern tourist center that aims to and has the ability to put itself on a world tourist map. It is located on the Danube, on the intersection of the most important roads, near the mountain of Fruška Gora with 17 culturally and historically significant monasteries, and it is surrounded by typical Vojvodinian ranches. In addition, there are 17th-century Petrovaradin Fortress, appealing old city center, numerous museums, parks, monuments, theatres, churches, prestigious Novi Sad Fair, as well as many world famous festivals and events.

Geographically, Novi Sad is in a favourable position. It lies on important transit routes, which provides significant comparative assets. Novi Sad is connected to the region with road and railway routes as well as waterways. The city is only a one-hour drive from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.

City of Novi Sad reveals itself as a city located in a vast plain, spacious and open to all directions. What eyes could also perceive are green oases embodied in City parks, with labyrinth of streets and alleys meandering around them and cut across with wide and straight boulevards. Moreover, there is the Danube river- one of the distinguishing features of Novi Sad and the famous ‘corso’ the “Belgrade Quay”, as well as numerous beaches along the shore, especially the most beautiful and well maintained “Shtrand” («Štrand»). At the other end of the Belgrade Quay, there is a Fishing island («Ribarsko ostrvo») that stands out for its cuisine and rafts. Novi Sad has a temperate continental climate; therefore the city has all four seasons. Novi Sad is the second best developed sports city in Serbia, with about 220 sports organizations, including football, basketball, tennis and many other sports clubs. Novi Sad was the host of the many sports events, including European and World Championships in table tennis in 1981, the 2005 European Basketball Championship, as well as tennis Davis Cup matches in few occasions. The former world No. 1 on WTA rankings Monica Seles, was born and raised in Novi Sad, where she started her successful tennis career.


One of the most important symbols of Novi Sad is the Petrovaradin Fortress. Built in the 17th and 18th century, it represents a cultural-historical monument. Located within the fortress are the Museum of the City of Novi Sad, the Academy of the Arts, the Observatory as well as the Archives of the City.

EXIT festival is an annual summer music festival that has been held at the fortress since its inception in 2001. Since then, it has grown to one of the biggest in Europe. CNN, the New York Times, and many others have proclaimed Exit to be one of the top 10 world’s best music festivals. Close to the city, there are also:


Fruška Gora with its national park, where 16 Orthodox monasteries can be found (founded in the period from the 15th to 18th century as pious endowments of Serbian despots), with forested areas, rare plant and wildlife, nature reserves, numerous lakes, mountain trails, complete with mountaineers homes and hotels represents one of the tourist destinations with the most content in the out lazing areas of the Danube.


Sremski Karlovci is a town and municipality in Serbia, on the bank of the river Danube, 9 kilometres (5 miles) from Novi Sad. Today, due to its glorious past, Karlovci remained an important cultural and spiritual center of the Serbian nation. Grape harvest in Karlovci, popular event Grožđenbal, has a long tradition since it is one of the most important wine-growing regions in the country.The central part of the event is definitely selling exhibition of grapes, wine and a variety of souvenirs, as well as other economic and cultural exhibitions. Sremski Karlovci produces excellent wine. Its rustic cellars draw more and more visitors each year.
